Selma Area Feeling the Impact of Federal Government Shutdown

By George McDonald

From the West Alabama Newsroom--  The federal government shutdown is being felt around the country -- but the impact is even worse in small towns where people rely heavily on the services the federal government provides.

Several federal offices in Selma are closed due to the government shutdown. The social security office and the V-A clinic are two of the federal offices that remain open.

Dallas County resident and Air Force veteran Cindy Fowler says the shutdown has her concerned about the state of the nation.

"I feel that for a while now that the government hasn't really been about the people, it's been more about the party," said Fowler. "My concerns are that its become such a political agenda that its come to which side's going to win."

The government shutdown is the first in 17 years.
