Street Renaming Effort Underway in Selma

By George McDonald

From the West Alabama Newsroom--  There is an effort underway in Selma to rename a city street in honor of one of the local leaders of the 1965 Voting Rights Movement.

A public hearing has been set to discuss changing the name of LeGrand Street in Selma -- to F.D. Reese Street.

Reverend Frederick Douglas Reese worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior and other leaders during the Selma Voting Rights Movement of 1965. He's also been the pastor of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church on LeGrand Street -- for nearly fifty years.

Selma resident Tashunta Moore lives on LeGrand Street.

"I don't see anything wrong with the name change with him being a positive icon in the area and throughout this nation also," said Moore.

The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 23rd -- at four o'clock in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
