Race for Troy Mayor Heats Up
From the CBS 8 Troy Newsroom-- The race for mayor in Troy is heating up. A city councilman has announced his candidacy, and current Mayor Jimmy Lunsford may be changing his mind about seeking reelection.
Last summer, Mayor Jimmy Lunsford told us he would be seeking reelection, and he says as of now, that still stands. But until he makes his formal announcement in June, folks in Troy are wondering will Lunsford and his long time friend Jason Reeves go head-to-head this August?
"It's my plans today to continue," says Lunsford.
Lunsford says he's giving himself until June 1 to change his mind. That's when he will be making his formal announcement on whether or not he will be seeking reelection.
"Thirty years is a long time, and I have got a couple of big projects on my mind," he says. "If I thought I could resolve those two projects by the first Monday in November when we change office, and if I thought I could resolve those, I may not run."
But whether or not Lunsford enters the race, Reeves says his decision has been made. Serving as city councilman for the last 16 years, Reeves has not only worked with Lunsford, but the two are close friends.
However, Reeves says there's no bad blood.
"I'm running because of what I want to do. I'm running because of the things I see for the future of the community," he says. "I feel like I have the experience from time in the city government, and in business, and a family man, but I also feel like I'm young enough and energetic enough to get some things done."
And while the two don't want to comment on the other's race, there's enough chatter in the community. And right now, it seems this race is going to be a close one.
"I think he's a terrific mayor. He's done a lot for the city of Troy. He really has," says Vicky McCann who supports Lunsford.
"He would do a great job for the community. I think he'll be a great advocate for education and for our kids," says Holly Lowery who is supporting Reeves.
Both will have to qualify on July 3, and Troy's municipal election will be held August 28.
