Advocate says Tutwiler Report "Wakes People Up" to Reality at Prison

By CBS-8 Reporter

An attorney for inmates says a recently released Federal Justice Department report, reveals a number of problems at Tutwiler Prison in Wetumpka.

Bryan Stevenson of the Montgomery-based Equal Justice Initiative says the study "wakes people up" to what's going on at Alabama's prison for women.

The organization filed complaints leading to the federal report.

The report showed officials in Tutwiler have not correctly treated some complaints of sexual abuse, but Alabama Prison Commissioner Kim Thomas disagrees with the Equal Justice Initiative.

Thomas says Tutwiler officials do take aggressive actions against prison abuse, including rape, harrasment, and sexual assault, but would not explain how employees have been fired or prosecuted in connection with sexual assaults.
