Wetumpka Waits For Draft Beer

Elmore County residents will have to continue to wait for draft beer, and that has many people upset.

Bills to bring the issue to a vote for Millbrook and Wetumpka died when the legislature wrapped up its session last week.

When lawmakers finished their work, one of the many things left hanging was draft beer for Wetumpka and Millbrook.

Bills to bring the issue to a vote passed in one house, but failed to make it through both. And that leaves Mayor Jerry Willis frustrated.

"It hurts us. It hurts us that we cannot use this as a tool in recruiting restaurants. I don't care where we go, on the streets, different functions, at church, people as us, when are we going to be able to get those chain restaurants we want here?" said Mayor Willis.

He says it may be some time before they can bring more chains to town because a big requirement is draft beer sales.

Local restaurants will also have to continue to sell only bottled beer.

People around town are tired of waiting to vote on the issue.

"My personal feelings is it should be put up for a referendum and let the people vote. If they vote it in, good, if they don't vote it in, good. Let that be the end of it. Don't leave it up to the politicians," said resident James McDonald.

"Right now Wetumpka is kind of slow and to bring more business and job wise I would say yes. To bring Wetumpka on the map because a lot of people still can't find the casino to this day up here. I think it would be a great idea," said resident Jennifer Hill.

But Mayor Willis is most upset that a local decision is put on hold by the state.

"It's so unfair that the politics that are played on a state level that pertains to us on a local level. This was a local bill."

This is the second year in a row that a bill to bring draft beer to Wetumpka has failed.
