What Are the Current Gun Laws?

With the news of stricter gun laws in the works in Washington, there is some debate over what is legal now... and what the Second Amendment actually means.

The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states:

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

What does that mean to you?

"That you have the right to protect yourself in a bad situation, if you need to have a weapon, you should be able to," said Najah Beasley.

The question the country is facing now is whether or not there should be some type of ban on certain assault weapons.

"The NRA is so powerful there is no restriction on the type of guns you can have or ammunition. You can have a machine gun. You can have a bazooka. You can have a tank... Any type of gun is allowed in the United States," said CBS 8 Legal Analyst Steve Flowers.

The people we talked to agreed there should be some restrictions.

"Like when people have AK's and stuff, that's unnecessary. But if you have a little pistol or something for your protection, that's okay because people go overboard with the type of gun they can get," said Beasely.

"I think everyone should be able to have one if they want to, but they need to change the laws a little bit. It's a fine line that I think is going to take a lot of people to figure out," said Carl Nason.

In the meantime, Nason says he will hold fast to the second amendment.

"Right to keep and bear arms-- I've got mine. They ain't getting them away from me," said Nason.

As for you, as an individual, according to Alabama Code, you have the right to defend yourself or a third party if you believe you are in imminent danger of unlawful physical force..
