Will Montgomery County See a Ban on Sagging Pants?

The 2012 legislative session kicks off tomorrow and there will be plenty of issues for lawmakers to talk about. Is a sagging pants ban on the top of that list?

Hundreds of bills are just waiting to get on the calendar and one of them is a ban on sagging pants in Montgomery County.

"It's unconstitutional to show your underwear when walking down Dexter Avenue and Fairveiw Avenue. It's unconstitutional and illegal and unlawful and unethical and immoral," said Representative Alvin Holmes.

It's not the only bill Rep. Holmes says he plans to bring to the table, but he says it's an important one. He plans to pursue it aggressively.

"I'm going to bring it up this week," he said, "I'm going to pass it, just as true as my name is Alvin Holmes!"

Less than 10 percent of proposed bills are passed into law each session, but CBS 8 Political Analyst Steve Flowers doesn't doubt this could be one of them.

"It shouldn't have much opposition. I think most people agree with that, most legislators," said Flowers, "They probably see kids walking around with their pants sagging and they don't like it, so it will probably get a pretty positive response."

A positive response from not only legislators, but Montgomery residents too.

"I think they should be ticketed. They shouldn't be walking around all little kids with their pants all the way down like that," said Montgomery resident, Cassandra Holmes.

"Even though it may be considered to be minute compared to other things, but it's something that we definitely need to look at," said supporter, Faye Lawson.

"You didn't see Dr. King sagging his pants as he marched from Selma to Montgomery. So, I think it's disrespectful to our forefathers and those who laid a path for us to enjoy the freedoms that we have today," said Charles James, who dislikes sagging pants.

Since the legislation will only apply to Montgomery County, only Montgomery legislators will have to vote on it.
