BREAKING NEWS FROM CBS 8 NEWS:
STRONG STORMS BRING DAMAGE, POWER OUTAGES TO MONTGOMERY

This is Breaking News from CBS 8 News -- Brief, strong storms in Montgomery Thursday evening have left behind damage and power outages.  The strongest of the storms hit between 7 and 8 p.m. and CBS 8 News was first on the air with video of the damage.

CBS 8 News is on the scene of the damage in several parts of the city.  The worst damage appears to be at Jim Woodham's Southside Tire and Auto on Troy Highway, which had extensive damage.  Also, damage is reported at Brewbaker Jr. High School off Bell Road.  Tom Salter, a spokesman for Montgomery Public Schools, told CBS 8 News late Thursday night that the school would be closed Friday.

There are many reports of downed trees.  A car wrecked on East Boulevard near Troy Highway when a metal garage door blew onto the roadway.

Late Thursday night, areas around East Boulevard and Troy Highway were plunged into darkness, including areas near CBS 8, which is running on generator power.   Many stores and restaurants on East Boulevard from near Troy Highway and McGehee Road to near the Interstate 85 exit were in the dark.  Several traffic lights were out.

City leaders have set up a command center at Montgomery Mall to assess where to send crews.

In the Cloverdale area of Montgomery, storm damage reports are still coming in.  A tree has toppled over at the intersection of Narrow Lane Road and Woodley Road.  CBS 8 Sports Analyst John Longshore was near that intersection when the storm hit.  Longshore says a few transformers blew and the rain was so heavy that he says he could not see the front of his car.

Two minutes after the rain started, hail began to fall.

After the storm, Longshore said he tried to turn on several roads and all were blocked because of downed trees.

Several viewers have called CBS 8 to tell us about several trees down in the Vaughn Meadows and Gay Meadows area and near Bear Elementary School.

In Pike Road, Mayor Gordon Stone tells CBS 8 that west of Chantilly Parkway and Vaughn Road, Vaughn Road is shut down for traffic traveling east.  The road is closed because of a tree that's down in the roadway.

Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright says if you have a non-emergency to report, call either 311 or (334) 240-4636.

Count on CBS 8 News and the CBS 8 First Alert Weather Network to keep you updated on the damage.
