MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — State officials are urging Alabamians to turn in any expired or unneeded prescription drugs on Saturday.

Saturday is the fourth National Prescription Drug Take-Back day. Alabamians will be able to turn in old prescription drugs at drop-off points throughout the state.

The Alabama Department of Public Health says prescription drug abuse is an emerging public health issue and the nation's fastest-growing drug problem.

In 2010, Alabama had one of the highest rates of prescription painkillers sold per 10,000 people.

A news release from Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange states that many teenagers who abuse prescription drugs get them from family and friend or home medicine cabinets.
