GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) — One Alabama county is putting prisoners to work cleaning up the Coosa River.

The Etowah County Sheriff's Office says more than 35 inmates will spend this week picking up trash and debris from the banks of the Coosa.

The prisoners are from a substance abuse prevention program. The department says they will be supervised by deputies.

The prisoners began work Monday, and they'll continue through Friday. The work is part of the Renew Our Rivers cleanup program.
