RUN TO DEATH

GADSDEN, Ala. — A judge's warning was all it took to prevent prosecutors and defense lawyers from talking about the murder charges against a grandmother and stepmother accused of making a 9-year-old girl to death as punishment for a lie, but a debate over the case is still raging on Facebook. OBIT-GOOBER PYLE

George Lindsey, who spent nearly 30 years as the grinning Goober on "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Hee Haw," has died. He was 83. A press release from Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home in Nashville said Lindsay died early Sunday morning after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements were still being made. Lindsey was the beanie-wearing Goober on "The Andy Griffith Show" from 1964 to 1968 and its successor, "Mayberry RFD," from 1968 to 1971. He played the same jovial character — a service station attendant — on "Hee Haw" from 1971 until it went out of production in 1993. "America has grown up with me," Lindsey said in an Associated Press interview in 1985. "Goober is every man; everyone finds something to like about ol' Goober." By Travis Loller.

THRIFT STORES-ECONOMY

DOTHAN, Ala. — On one end of economic development since the recession has been the consistent challenge of local communities to both maintain what industries they have and secure larger industries - like aviation - that have promise. On another end has been the somewhat expected boom of consignment, thrift and dollar stores that are thriving throughout the area. Officials said the development of thrift stores and more dollar stores during dark times in the economy is nothing new and contributes to the economy in several ways. In Ozark alone, at least four thrift stores have opened in the last several months, some of which have located in areas left vacant during the recession. The B.A.T.H. House, a thrift shop Tim Tadlock said was formed to fund the Breaking Away the Hurt ministry he began in 2011, opened recently inside the former Alltel facility on Andrews Avenue. According to the Alabama Retail Association, holiday sales in 2011 reached nearly $8.8 billion, which represented a 4.41-percent growth in sales and surpassed the projected 3.5 percent. ARA spokeswoman Nancy Dennis said those numbers include increases in sales from thrift shops and dollar stores.

MONTGOMERY ARTIST

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Putting paint to canvas has been Barbara Binford Davis' calling all along. "I can't remember not wanting to be an artist," said Davis, who after years of relegating art to the sidelines now works full-time as a fine artist. Her style is impressionistic, portraying scenes of nature, and particularly skyscapes, but scenes of the city, as well — downtown streets, iconic spots in Cloverdale, the Capital and other landmarks.
