Ala. House OKs bill to allow larger beer bottlesMONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama beer aficionados are a step closer to being able to purchase their suds in the larger bottles they say gourmet brew is often sold in. The state House on Wednesday approved a Senate bill to allow beer to be sold in bottles that contain almost 26 ounces. Currently beer can only be sold in 16-ounce bottles or cans. Proponents say that size allows for the sale of high-end specialty beer, which is typically sold in bottles that are either 22 ounces or 750 milliliters. The House had previously stalled an identical measure. Opponents worried that Alabamians would get intoxicated quicker off of fewer beers. House sponsor Rep. Jim Barton says Alabama is the only state in the nation that does not allow the sale of those larger bottles. |
