House passes education budget $141M less than 2012MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama House has passed an education budget that is $141 million short of what was spent last year. The House adopted changes to a Senate version of the budget on Thursday, adding an additional $10 million in funding. The House-passed budget includes a nearly $37 million cut to state universities, a $77 million reduction for kindergarten through 12th grade and a cut of $13 million to the Education Department. Under the House version, about 528 education jobs would be cut. Sponsor Rep. Jay Love says that number is about 600 lower than the jobs that would have been lost under the education budget proposed by the governor. The education budget now goes to the Senate, which can either accept the changes or hammer out differences in a conference committee. |
