No charges against Headland officers in shootingDOTHAN, Ala. (AP) — A grand jury won't press charges against the Headland police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a 33-year-old man. Henry County District Attorney Doug Valeska said Friday that a 14-member grand jury decided against pressing criminal charges after hearing from eight witnesses. The grand jury was investigating the death of 33-year-old Opatrick Fitzgerald Humphrey, who was fatally shot by police on Jan. 31. Valeska said he believed the shooting was legally justified. Authorities said Humphrey twice charged at police officers and ignored repeated warnings. Relatives said that Humphrey suffered from schizophrenia and was not taking his medication because it made him sick. Family spokesman Kenny Glasgow said the late man's family was disappointed with the decision and believes the grand jury did not hear from all potential witnesses. ___ Information from: The Dothan Eagle, http://www.dothaneagle.com |
