Ex-Ala. Gov. Siegelman gloves up for charityBIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman donned boxing gloves Saturday night for a charity exhibition match. The Birmingham News reports (http://bit.ly/JKFLRT ) Siegelman participated in the three-round bout as part of a fundraiser for the Levite Jewish Community Center, American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. An avid practitioner of karate and more recently of boxing, Siegelman fought his karate sparring partner Jerry Schnader. Siegelman was convicted in 2006 of selling a state appointment in exchange for a $500,000 campaign contribution. He says there wasn't much opportunity for karate or boxing while in prison. There was no winner declared in the bout, but Siegelman's boxing coach and sanctioned referee Martin Juarez says he would have called the fight a draw. |
