Alabama gas prices lower for holiday travel

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An automobile club says more Americans are expected to travel away from home this Memorial Day holiday weekend than last year, but they will travel shorter distances.

Officials with the American Automobile Association tell The Birmingham News (http://bit.ly/Jbkw5I) that Alabama residents will pay less for gas during the upcoming holiday weekend than in past months.

AAA Alabama spokesman Clay Ingram says gas prices had risen sharply early this year, cutting into motorists' budgets.

However, he said those prices have dropped 40 cents a gallon in Alabama in the last few weeks to an average of $3.40 per gallon, Ingram said. That's 28 cents a gallon less than this time last year, he said.
