Gen .Wheeler's Pond Spring home reopens SaturdayMONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Gen. Joe Wheeler's historic home near Courtland will reopen to the public Memorial Day weekend after being closed for more than a decade for restoration. The executive director of the Alabama Historical Commission, Frank White, said Wheeler's Pond Spring Mansion has undergone a stunning transformation. Wheeler was a cavalry general in the Civil War and later served in the U.S. Army in the Spanish-American War. The house features the general's memorabilia and the furnishings his family used at the home. His home will be open for guided tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. After that, the Historical Commission says the house and grounds will be open Wednesdays through Sundays. . |
