PRICHARD, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a 28-year-old man died after collapsing in the back of a police car following his arrest.

Police said Roydell Oneal Kennedy died early Thursday morning at South Alabama Medical Center. Authorities say Kennedy was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of drug possession.

Police say Kennedy led officers on a chase, including hiding inside a church, before his arrest. Police say they found painkillers inside the car Kennedy was driving and a vial of crack cocaine nearby.

Prichard Chief Jimmie Gardner said Kennedy's death is under investigation to be sure the officers acted properly. The officers are still on active duty.

Kennedy's family couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
