Ala. schools take different approaches to calendarMONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama schools are taking different approaches to a new law that requires they start the school year later and end before Memorial Day. Some districts, like Hoover City Schools, are requiring that students attend class for longer days fewer times in the year. Others, like the Tuscaloosa County School System, are keeping the same 180-day calendar by cutting some holidays and other days off. The law requires schools to start no later than two weeks before Labor Day and end by Memorial Day. Students must attend 180 days or 1,080 hours. Legislators say the goal is to increase sales tax revenue during the summer tourism season, though the Legislative Fiscal Office says there will be no impact to state or local funding. |
