ABBEVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a south Alabama deputy is charged with stealing from people he encountered while on patrol.

Henry County Sheriff William Maddox says state investigators arrested 32-year-old Nicholas Cheek on Thursday at the county courthouse. He is accused of four theft counts and a fifth charge of intimidating a witness.

Maddox tells The Dothan Eagle (http://bit.ly/KlvhrM) that Cheek already has been fired.

The deputy allegedly confiscated and kept a gun while answering a domestic violence call in 2009. He's accused of taking other items including a gun and prescription medicine during traffic stops.

Court records aren't yet available to show whether Cheek has a lawyer. Maddox says he had worked with the department since 2008, most recently as a sergeant supervising a shift.

Cheek is free on bond.
