County could change name of road honoring felon

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Jefferson County might rename a road that currently honors a former county commissioner who pleaded guilty to bribery.

Commissioner Joe Knight tells WBRC-TV (http://bit.ly/N68X1o ) he thinks it's time to rename Mary Buckelew Parkway.

Buckelew pleaded guilty to accepting a bribe from Montgomery investment banker Bill Blount to land millions of dollars in bond business.

The deal resulted in one of numerous public corruption convictions in Jefferson County, which filed the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history last year. Officials say the corrupt transactions played a large role in the county's financial failure.

Knight says it's time to remove Buckelew's name from the road.
