MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — A federal judge has approved a $225,000 settlement, ending years of legal battles in a sexual abuse lawsuit involving the Monroe County Public Schools.

The Press-Register reports (http://bit.ly/KlvEO4) that the lawsuit was scheduled to go to trial this month in Mobile. Instead, attorneys for both sides negotiated a settlement that resolves the long-running litigation.

U.S. District Judge Ginny Granade signed off on the agreement Wednesday.

The lawsuit named the school system, the principal of Monroeville Middle School and a teacher there as defendants.

A Monroeville woman, whose daughter was one of two mentally impaired plaintiffs, said she was glad the settlement was reached so her daughter can move on with her life.
