Man accused of raping stranded motorist he helpedGADSDEN, Ala. (AP) — An Altoona man is accused of helping a stranded motorist, then following her to a residence and raping her. The Etowah County Sheriff's Department said 27-year-old Phillip Charles Browning is charged with first-degree rape and is in the county jail with bond set at $100,000. Officers said a 26-year-old woman stopped at a service station in Gadsden when her car ran hot on June 24. Officers said Browning helped her and then followed her to a residence where the rape occurred. Officers said the victim identified Browning from a lineup of several people. He was arrested after a five-day search. Court records do not indicate whether Browning has an attorney. |
