New Methodist bishop announced for north Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church has named a new bishop for its North Alabama Conference.

At its conference in Lake Junaluska, N.C., the jurisdiction announced Bishop Debra Wallace-Padgett has been assigned to north Alabama. She is currently serving as lead pastor of St. Luke UMC in Lexington, Ky., a position she has held for eight years. She is set to begin in her new role Sept. 1.

She has served in a variety of roles in the Kentucky Conference as well as on the Jurisdictional and General Conference levels.

She is married to Rev. Lee Padgett, a deacon in the United Methodist Church who serves as executive director of Aldersgate Camp and Retreat Center. They have two children, 20-year-old Leanndra and 17-year-old Andrew.
