BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama biologist is being awarded a grant of more than $500,000 to fund his research on multiple sclerosis.

The Birmingham News reports (http://bit.ly/NNRfTi ) that University of Alabama at Birmingham researcher Gordon Meares will use the money to study how cells in the brain and spinal cord may influence the immune system as he searches for clues to stopping the neurological disease.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society announced the grant earlier this week. It says MS affects more than 2.1 million people worldwide, including more than 4,200 in Alabama.

Meares says he wouldn't be able to pursue his research project if not for the organizations funding and support.
