AG seizes records from Harpersville courtHARPERSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Law enforcement officers have raided the Harpersville City Hall, seizing written and electronic records from the municipal court and police department. Investigators with the Shelby County sheriff and the state attorney general served a search warrant Thursday afternoon to get the records. The sheriff's office said the records will be reviewed by investigators. The raid comes nearly a month after a judge issued an injunction against the town and a private probation company, Shelby County Circuit Judge Hub Harrington ruled that the Harpersville Municipal Court was running a "judicially sanctioned extortion racket." He said if defendants weren't able to immediately pay court-imposed fines, their cases were turned over to Judicial Corrections Services. He said many were later thrown in jail, which led to more costs and debt. |
