Pelham businessman guilty on tobacco tax chargesCOLUMBIANA, Ala. (AP) — The owner of a wholesale distribution company in Pelham has pleaded guilty in a major tobacco tax case and agreed to pay $1.7 million. Shamim Ahmed Khan entered the plea Tuesday in Shelby County Circuit Court to charges of tobacco tax evasion and criminal possession of a forged instruction. He admitted not paying more than $806,000 in tobacco taxes. A plea agreement provides for prosecutors to recommend a six-month sentence followed by five years of supervised probation and for Khan to pay $1.7 million in taxes, interest and penalties. An investigation by the state attorney general's office and the state Revenue Department resulted in Khan being indicted in January on charges stemming from his role as president of Capital Wholesale and Distribution, which supplies convenience stores. |
