No date yet for public meeting on Forest DrillingANNISTON, Ala. (AP) — More than three months after a last-minute delay, no date has been announced for a promised public hearing on plans to drill for oil and gas on 43,000 acres of the Talladega National Forest. The Anniston Star reports (http://bit.ly/QvEmNh) that federal officials said last spring they were tentatively scheduling an informational meeting concerning the matter in August. Federal officials have reported that they're still planning a public meeting concerning land leases and drilling in the forest. Keith Johnston, managing attorney for the Southern Environmental Law Center, said the meeting may occur this fall. The Law Center has been tracking the development of the proposed land lease sales in the forest. Attempts to confirm that with Steve Lohr, director of the U.S. Forest Service for Alabama, were unsuccessful late last week. ___ Information from: The Anniston Star, http://www.annistonstar.com/ |
