WETUMPKA, Ala. (AP) — A funeral service has been held in Wetumpka for a University of South Alabama freshman who was killed by a campus police officer.
The service for 18-year-old Gil Collar took place Saturday at Mulder Memorial United Methodist Church. The church is a few miles from his Wetumpka home.
The services were closed to the media.
Collar was shot a week ago after going to the campus police station nude and pounding on the glass. Police said he had taken LSD and acted aggressively when an officer came outside carrying a gun. The officer repeatedly backed away from the unarmed student before firing. An attorney for the student's family, Jere Beasley, says Collar never touched the officer and the fatal shooting never should have happened.
