Ala. man kills himself with stolen police gun
MCCALLA, Ala. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the apparent suicide of a man who shot himself with a gun left in a bar bathroom by an off-duty police officer.
Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector said the officer, whom authorities have not identified, inadvertently left his handgun in the bathroom of the On Tap Sports Café Galleria. By the time he realized it, the handgun was gone.
Officials said 25-year-old Steven Michael Bradford found the gun. He sold it to 26-year-old Matthew Lee Dodd.
Not long after, Dodd and the man who apparently killed himself stopped at a gas station. Police said that Dodd went inside, heard a popping sound and came outside to find his friend dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police charged Bradford and Dodd this week.
