TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (AP) — A teenager has died following a prank played by a group of teenage boys in northern Alabama.

Authorities say 15-year-old Jesse Rainey was taken off life support Friday at a Birmingham hospital.

Colbert County Sheriff Ronnie May said previously that the shooting happened early Saturday morning at a rural home in Tuscumbia where eight teenagers had gone for the weekend. No adults were present.

May said a group went outside to play a prank. They flipped off an electrical breaker to turn out the lights. Rainey then hid in a closet as part of the prank.

When one boy opened that closet door, Rainey jumped out to scare him. The boy fired a gun, shooting Rainey in the head.

Authorities are investigating the case as an accidental shooting.
