MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — A 30-year-old south Alabama man faces two life sentences for beating his paralyzed mother to death and assaulting a neighbor.

AL.com reports (http://bit.ly/PWT7wt ) that Mobile County Circuit Judge Rick Stout sentenced Christopher Adam Salter of Wilmer on Thursday.

Salter pleaded guilty to striking 53-year-old Nancy Dickens with a hammer in her bedroom in December 2010. He buried her body in the backyard. A month earlier, he assaulted a neighbor with a pipe. Salter told authorities that attacking his neighbor gave him a thrill and was one of the reasons he killed his mother.

Salter must serve at least 30 years in prison before he can be considered for early release. His attorney said Salter initially wanted the death penalty.

Wilmer is about 20 miles west of Mobile.
