Ala. judge leaves bench when defendant collapses

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A hospital spokeswoman says a defendant who collapsed and stopped breathing in an Alabama courtroom is in critical condition.

A Marshall County judge leapt from the bench and helped resuscitate 48-year-old Franklin Gary Carter on Tuesday.

Huntsville Hospital spokeswoman Nicole Murray said Wednesday evening that Carter was in critical condition.
