1 Ala. deputy killed, another wounded in shootout
FAIRHOPE, Ala. (AP) — The deputy sheriff killed in a shootout in Alabama was a law enforcement veteran who also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and had recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan.
That's according to Baldwin County Sheriff Huey Mack. He tells AL.com (http://bit.ly/QBWPNG) that the deputy killed Friday night, Scott Ward, had been responding to a domestic disturbance call with two other deputies.
One of those other deputies was wounded, while the third was not hurt. The wounded deputy remained in critical condition early Saturday. They were not identified.
Mack says the suspect, Michael Jansen of Fairhope, was killed in the shootout.
The county's Major Crimes Task Force was investigating the shooting, as is the department's internal affairs office. That is standard procedure when any officer is involved in a shooting.
