NORTHPORT, Ala. (AP) — A 37-year-old police officer in western Alabama has died of internal injuries after being thrown from his car during an accident.

Officials say Jimmy Guin, a 9-year department veteran, was pronounced dead at 2:34 a.m. at the University of Alabama Hospital.

Guin was driving his personal car around 6:30 Thursday morning when he was involved in a car accident. Authorities say the driver of the other car was not injured.

Alabama State Troopers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, and no charges have been filed.

Guin's friends say they will collect money at a local civic center to help the fallen officer's family pay for his funeral.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
