Alfa president seeks to reverse membership slide

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The new president of the Alabama Farmers Federation and Alfa Insurance says his focus will be on the insurance business.

Chilton County farmer Jimmy Parnell was elected Monday. He says the membership at Alfa has declined from nearly 468,000 in 2005 to 384,000 this year. He says increased competition is one of the reasons. He says he plans to get those numbers up by finding ways to say yes to more customers.

On the political side, Parnell says he doesn't anticipate major changes. He says the organization will continue to work tax issues, particularly keeping inheritance taxes from increasing.

The issue is important to farmers because they have to pay such taxes on inherited land. The taxes can quickly add up if they own a valuable parcel.
