Ala. woman sentenced in rape of disabled woman

WETUMPKA, Ala. (AP) — A judge has sentenced a 43-year-old Elmore County woman to 10 years in prison for helping her husband rape a mentally disabled woman.

The Montgomery Advertiser ( ) reports Sheila Sanders, of Wetumpka, received her sentence Wednesday morning in the Elmore County Circuit Court. Sanders pleaded guilty to second degree rape after helping her husband Matthew have sex with the unidentified woman. Officials say the victim was unable to consent to having sex because of her disability.

Prosecutors say Sheila Sanders wanted her husband to impregnate the woman so they could raise the child as their own. The victim eventually became pregnant, an investigation was launched and the fetus was aborted.

Officials say Matthew Sanders is serving a 15-year prison sentence.

Wetumpka is about 20 miles northeast of Montgomery.
