BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Police say a 48-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after dragging a Birmingham police officer alongside his car when he fled a traffic stop.

AL.com reports (http://bit.ly/XizSOk) Mark Anthony Nelson, of Alabaster, was taken into custody Tuesday and is being held on $60,000 bond in the Jefferson County Jail.

Authorities say Nelson was stopped around 9:30 p.m. Sunday for an undisclosed traffic violation and was told to turn the vehicle off. Police say Nelson refused and drove off when the officer reached through his window to try removing the keys from the ignition.

Police say the unidentified officer was not seriously injured and is recovering from the incident. It was unclear Tuesday if Nelson had a lawyer.

Alabaster is about 25 miles south of Birmingham.
