Univ. of South Alabama names interim president

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — The University of South Alabama Board of Trustees has named Vice President of student affairs John Smith as interim president.

WKRG-TV reported (http://bit.ly/VsWOIN) that the school's board of trustees planned to meet Friday to appoint an interim leader. In a release Friday, school officials said university President Gordon Moulton has been granted a 90-day leave of absence to recover from surgery that was related to cancer treatment.

Moulton has been the school's president since 1998.

For more than 40 years, Moulton has worked in some capacity at the University of South Alabama. Smith has worked at the University of South Alabama since 2008 and has also served as special assistant to the president.
