MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Authorities have arrested a man who escaped from a jail in eastern Alabama in 1996 and had been on the run since then.

U.S. Marshals Spokesman Scott Sides says 41-year-old Danny Foster was captured Friday in Miami. The man was originally arrested in Randolph County, Ala. after he allegedly shot his estranged wife who was holding their 18-month-old son. Authorities say the boy was also wounded in his back.

Foster was indicted by a Randolph County grand jury in 1996 and fled the state before being arrested in California. Sides says he was extradited to Randolph County and escaped from the county jail in December of 1996.

Sides says Foster took on a new identity in Miami and will again be extradited to Randolph County.
