MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Conservation Commissioner N. Gunter Guy Jr. has released a map for a proposed new southwest Alabama region where deer season would be extended into February.

Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/WMkiL3 ) the proposed region would shift its deer season to end Feb. 10 rather than Jan. 31. That means the season would open 10 days later as well, but Gunter says it would allow hunters to take advantage of a late-season rut when deer are more active.

Gunter unveiled the map Saturday at a Conservation Advisory Board meeting. The proposed region included all or part of 11 counties — Mobile, Baldwin, Washington, Choctaw, Clarke, Monroe, Escambia, Conecuh, Wilcox, Butler and Covington.

The later start to the season would affect only hunters using guns. Bow hunting season would remain Oct. 15 through Feb. 10.
