WETUMPKA, Ala. (AP) — A dog from Illinois is back with its owners a month after disappearing from a Prattville motel.

Rachel Tomkins and Cartney James picked up their 3-year-old mixed breed dog, Mavis, at the animal shelter in Wetumpka on Saturday. Tomkins told the Montgomery Advertiser (http://on.mgmadv.com/15HcPPM ) that she never gave up hope that the dog was alive.

The couple was traveling through Alabama and stopped in Prattville to spend the night Feb. 15. The dog got out of their motel room while they were at dinner. Concerned residents posted fliers and spread the word. The dog was found March 18 in the back yard of a home 12 miles away in Wetumpka.

James said he always thought that "Southern charm" was a superficial saying, but now he knows Southerners are "genuinely kind."
