BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Traveling on Interstate 20 east of Birmingham is about to get tougher in the coming months.

Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/XtJglH ) a $38.5 million project to upgrade lanes of the roadway will begin April 8. The work is expected to take three months and will require detours as portions of I-20 are closed to traffic during construction.

The Alabama Department of Transportation will strip down and resurface a 10-mile stretch of the highway between Interstate 459 and the I-20 and I-59 split near the Birmingham airport.

The first phase of the project will close eastbound lanes, then will switch to detours for westbound traffic.

Alabama DOT spokeswoman Linda Crockett says the last major roadwork project done on this portion of I-20 was in 1974.
