MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Senate is back to its full membership of 35.

The Senate welcomed new Sen. Bill Hightower of Mobile on Tuesday. The Mobile businessman won a Republican runoff March 12 with state Rep. Jim Barton of Mobile for Senate District 35. He was supposed to advance to a general election April 23, but that was canceled because no Democrat or independent candidate qualified. He automatically won with no opposition.

He replaces Ben Brooks of Mobile, who resigned to become a circuit judge.

In his new job, Hightower will serve as a member of the Banking and Insurance Committee, the Job Creation and Economic Development Committee and the Commerce, Transportation and Utilities Committee.

Barton retained his seat in the House after losing the runoff.
