It's a new year... And for many it's time to get back to getting healthy.

"New Year, new attitude, new beginning... Get rid of this excess," said Kesha Farrior.

It's Farrior's first day at the "Y" on Carter Hill Road. And she is trying to make it a commitment.

Zelva Frazier has been coming a while longer and says eating right and exercise has become a part of his lifestyle.

"I have 2 younger children and I always said I wanted to be around and be active with my children and I never wanted to be that fellow that was just a couch potato," said Frazier.

And he's seeing the benefits.

"I think it helps out a lot that I am active now, because I'm not as tired, not as sleepy, not as sluggish," said Frazier.

That's something the Alabama Department of Public Health wants to help Alabama residents do as well.

Gina McDonald is an Alabama resident and a recent winner on the TV show "Biggest Loser."

"Alabama is number 5 in the country for most obese states. Scale Back Alabama is just a good start. People make their resolutions in January and by mid- January their resolutions are gone. They aren't doing them anymore. And Scale Back starts where people fall off the wagon so to speak," said McDonald.

The Scale Back program consists of teams of 4 people and runs January through April.

"We are encouraging people to make small changes and move a little bit in 10 weeks, lose 10 pounds. Just a great way to fight obesity in Alabama," said McDonald.

Starting with that first step is all it takes.

"It doesn't matter how old you are, how young you are, what size you are, everybody needs some form of exercise in their life. And this is the time to get out there and get it," said Farrior.
