MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A summary of action in the Alabama Legislature on Wednesday, a committee meeting day:

COMMITTEES:

—Senate Education Committee approved a bill to end the use of Common Core education standards in public schools. Goes to Senate.

—Senate Education Committee approved a bill that would amend a law banning public educators and state employees from serving in the Legislature after 2014 so that it would allow current educators and state employees to remain after 2014. Goes to Senate.

—Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee approved a bill to phase out the state sales tax on groceries and increase the tax on other items. Goes to Senate.

—Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee approved a bill to combine the state health insurance programs for educators and state employees.

—Senate Health Committee approved a bill to restructure Alabama's Medicaid program into regions. Goes to Senate.

—House Health Committee approved a bill to restructure Medicaid into regions. Goes to House.

—House Ways and Means-Education Committee approved a bill establishing a $50 million bond issue to make Alabama schools safer. Goes to House.

—House Ways and Means-Education Committee passed a bill to spend $23 million to rebuild portions of one of the state's oldest high schools damaged by a Christmas Day tornado. Goes to House.

—House Ways and Means-General Fund Committee approved a $1.75 billion General Fund budget. Goes to House.
