Ala. Democratic chair starts new foundation
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The former chairman of Alabama's Democratic Party says he's forming a new group to combat Republican dominance in state politics.
Mark Kennedy announced the new Alabama Democratic Majority Foundation in Birmingham on Monday. Kennedy formed the group immediately after his resignation took effect as state party chairman.
He says state Democrats have to find a way to be more inclusive and broaden the party base if they ever hope to revive a two-party system in the state.
Kennedy says the new group isn't a political party, but will try to find and support Democratic candidates in Alabama. Kennedy's departure follows months of inter-party squabbling involving longtime vice chairman Joe Reed. Kennedy says Reed now has total control of the state party.
About 100 supporters attended the foundation kick off.
