BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Authorities in the Birmingham area say seven people were able to escape a fire in a mobile home, but one person died in the blaze.

Jefferson County sheriff's officials say the fire began shortly before 4 a.m. Monday on Springdale Road in Mount Olive. Firefighters arrived to find a double-wide mobile home fully engulfed by fire. The occupants had been awakened and five adults and two children fled the residence.

Authorities say 45-year-old James Swafford died in the fire. Sheriff's officials said family members attempted to rescue Swafford, but due to his medical condition, they could not get him to safety. Firefighters found his body as they were extinguishing the flames.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
