BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Police are investigating the shooting death of a lawn service owner who was gunned down during a grass-cutting job outside a Birmingham church.

Birmingham police say 76-year-old Birl Jackson was found Monday morning, slumped over the wheel of his pickup truck in the parking lot of Zion Star Missionary Baptist Church. Witnesses reported hearing three shots Monday morning shortly before finding Jackson in the truck.

Police say the crime appears to have been a robbery.

Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/13cXUyO ) that police said late Monday they have two suspects in custody.

The new site reports that Jackson had been cutting grass in the area surrounding the church and the King Manor Apartments. Authorities say it was unclear where he was shot, but he apparently made his way to the truck, where his grandson found him. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
