Worker killed in Alabama mining accident

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a miner has been killed in an accident at an Alabama coal mine.

The death happened Thursday evening at Jim Walter Resources Mine No. 7 in the Brookwood area of Tuscaloosa County, WBRC-TV reported.

The accident happened around 6:15 p.m. and involved one miner, Dennis Hall, a spokesman for Jim Walter Resources, told The Tuscaloosa News. He said a medical helicopter was dispatched to the site, in northern Tuscaloosa County near the Jefferson County line.

The 36-year-old man fell from a walkway onto equipment, which was in operation, police told The Birmingham News.

Jim Walter Resources, which is owned by Hoover-based Walter Energy, operates some of the country's deepest underground coal mines.
